Who We Are

We are environmental graphic designers. Our specialty is visual communication — wayfinding, identity, information design, branding – within a space. Trained as graphic designers, we understand (and even obsess over) the graphic aspects of communication — typography, color, layout, contrast, legibility, proportion. Our years of working in the built environment gives us a thorough understanding of scale, paths of travel, materials and processes, ADA and codes, and viewing distances. That combination has given us insight into how visitors use a space — where they look, where they travel, how much they read, and what messages are most important at any given point. Our expertise is connecting people and places.

Design Approach

First we listen. TollesonMcCoy understands the most successful projects begin with a complete understanding of the wishes, ideas and influences of the owner, designer, operator and end users of a space. The more information we gather in the beginning, the more efficient the design process will be. Our design is influenced by the environment surrounding it — the colors, materials, shapes and style. It should neither detract from the space surrounding it nor overshadow it. Each project is unique. The graphics should be designed to strengthen the ideas that make it a special place.
